The Moon Landing
On 20 July a human being sets foot on another world for the first time.
Kennedy promised it before the decade was out, and four hundred thousand people worked eight years to deliver. Apollo 11 lands in the Sea of Tranquility, Neil Armstrong descends the ladder, and some six hundred million people watch live. The photograph of Earth from space became one of the century's defining images.
