Amnon son of David אַמְנוֹן בֶּן־דָּוִד

David's firstborn, born in Hebron to Ahinoam of Jezreel (II Samuel 3:2).

He had a friend, Jonadab son of Shimeah, "a very shrewd man," who taught him to feign illness and ask that his sister come and prepare food for him. So it was done.

The book then describes what happened without softening, and ends with the line that explains everything: "Then Amnon hated her with a very great hatred, so that the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her. And Amnon said to her: Arise, be gone" (13:15).

"And when King David heard of all these things, he was very angry"—but he did nothing. Absalom "spoke to Amnon neither good nor bad" for two years, and then called his brothers to the sheepshearing at Baal-hazor and told his servants to kill him at the table (13:23–29).

From that killing and Absalom's flight begins everything that will end in the revolt.
