the jurist of Marseilles who wrote his code over twenty-three years
He studied under his father, Abba Mari. With Rabbeinu Tam he corresponded as an equal, not as a disciple; the Raavad brought him questions.
The Ittur is hard and dark: it is written densely, without explanation, and later men needed commentaries of their own upon it. But for that very reason it preserves readings of Geonic responsa and customs of Provence that are found nowhere else.
