The city of the Ner Israel yeshiva, where Slabodka, transplanted by Rav Ruderman, grew into one of America's chief yeshivot.
Baltimore's Jewish community is among America's older ones: the first synagogue here was dedicated in 1845, and in the nineteenth century the city was home both to Reform and to strict congregations from Germany.
On the timeline of Torah the city appears in 1933, when Rav Yaakov Yitzchak Ruderman, a Slabodka student, opened the Ner Israel yeshiva here. It grew slowly, over decades, and became one of the largest yeshivot in the country; around it a large neighbourhood of observant families formed. Today the Baltimore community is among the most visible in America, and the yeshiva is its heart.
