Hezekiah, son of Rabbi Hiyya חזקיה בריה דרבי חייא

in him one sees where the tannaim end and the amoraim begin

Son of Rabbi Hiyya the Great; his mother was Judith. Rabbi Yochanan bar Nappacha was not made head of the academy in his lifetime, out of respect for his teacher.

One detail is worth a whole chapter on how the law was read: he read the Megillah both on the fourteenth of Adar and on the fifteenth, because it was unclear whether Tiberias had been walled since the days of Joshua. The doubt was not resolved by a stretch—it was kept twice over. His colleagues were Rabbi Yannai, Bar Kappara and Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi.
