the Ruzhiner's son; the Chortkov court, the gentlest of the Ruzhin houses
One of the Ruzhiner's six sons. He settled in Chortkov in Galicia and led the court for more than fifty years—longer than any of his brothers.
What set the Chortkov house apart. He kept the Ruzhin manner, but his temper was another: gentleness, patience, speech without pressure. People came to him from places where the court was severe, and he sent no one away. The chasidic tales of him are almost always about how he did not take a sharp step where sharpness seemed natural.
In the quarrel with Sanz he held aside, trying to speak with both; reconciling them did not come off, but the Chortkov house came out of the quarrel with smaller losses than the rest.
He died on 8 Cheshvan 1902. His teachings are gathered in Divrei David.
