The Sha'ar ha-Torah yeshiva, headed for twenty years by Rabbi Shimon Shkop: a place where the method of thinking was taught rather than the rulings.
An old community on the Neman; Jews had been here since the fourteenth century, and the town was one of the chief ones in Lithuania. For this reference work it matters for something else: from 1920 to 1939 the Sha'ar ha-Torah yeshiva of Rabbi Shimon Shkop stood here, and students came to it from all over Eastern Europe.
In September 1939, as the Soviet forces approached, Rabbi Shimon told his students to leave for Vilna. Two days later he died. The community was destroyed in 1943.
