The Imrei Emes—Rabbi Avraham Mordechai Alter רבי אברהם מרדכי אלתר — אמרי אמת

The son of the Sfas Emes; he took the court in 1905, at thirty-nine. Under him Ger became the largest chasidic court in Poland, and the Gerrer chasidim a force reckoned with both in the communities and in the Sejm.

Agudath Israel. He was among those who founded it in 1912, and afterwards among those whose word decided. The argument was the same as Belz's thirty-four years earlier: the observant need a voice where things are decided.

The Land of Israel. He travelled there from 1921, bought land, went into the affairs of the settlements and called chasidim to settle. This was rare: most chasidic courts of Poland looked on the new settlement with distrust.

1940. When the war began he was in Warsaw under the bombs. Through the efforts of chasidim and by way of the Italian embassy he was brought out—Warsaw, Trieste, the Land of Israel. He gathered the court anew in Jerusalem almost from nothing; from Polish Ger almost no one returned.

He died on 6 Sivan 1948, on Shavuot of the state's first year.

His book is Imrei Emes, and by it he is named.
