Mar Rav Mar bar Mar Rav Huna is named by Sherira as the first Gaon of Sura—the year 4369, twenty years after Pumbedita.
The two academies ran side by side through the whole age and through the whole age argued over precedence. Sura held that it had been founded by Rav, the disciple of Rabbi; Pumbedita, that it had gone longer unbroken. By the ninth century primacy would pass to Sura, under Rav Saadya Gaon it would become the chief academy of the world—and yet it would close before Pumbedita.
