Sherira's list of the Geonim is plainly made: name, academy, year of accession. No works, no rulings, no circumstances. That is not carelessness: the letter was written to answer the community of Kairouan on how the Torah had been handed down—and the answer was precisely the unbrokenness of the names. Every name in the list means: here the chain did not break.
