Avodah Zarah עבודה זרה

The tractate is hardly concerned with theology and wholly with daily life: trade on the days of others' festivals, wine that may have been dedicated, vessels bought from a gentile, treatment by a foreign physician, bathhouses and statues. The question is everywhere the same: where sensible caution ends and hostility begins.

Famous is the account of Rabban Gamliel in the bathhouse with a statue of Aphrodite: asked how he could bathe there, he answered that the bath was not made as an ornament for the statue, but the statue set up in the bath—that is, one must look at what a thing actually serves.

Order: Nezikin. There is Gemara in both the Babylonian and the Jerusalem Talmud.
