Keritot כריתות
a tractate of the order of Kodashim
The tractate begins with a list: so many transgressions in the Torah are punished by karet—being cut off, a punishment not in the court's hands. One who did such a thing in error brings an offering; the tractate works out when one offering suffices and when several are due.
A subject of its own is the "asham talui", the offering of doubt: a person is unsure whether he transgressed, and brings it to shield himself until the matter is clarified. The Mishnah tells of Bava ben Buta, who brought such an offering every day except the day after Yom Kippur.
Order: Kodashim. There is Gemara in the Babylonian Talmud.
