a tractate of the order of Nashim
The ketubah is the document the bridegroom hands the bride, setting out what he owes her: food, clothing, conjugal duty, healing in sickness, and a fixed sum on divorce or widowhood. The sages made it obligatory "so that she should not be light in his eyes to send her away".
The tractate works through everything that follows from the contract: the wife's work and her earnings, the dowry and its fate, the maintenance of the widow and the daughters. It ends unexpectedly—with the rule that anyone may compel the household to go up to the Land of Israel, and no one may compel it to leave.
Order: Nashim. There is Gemara in both the Babylonian and the Jerusalem Talmud.
