Maasrot מעשרות

So long as produce is not "finished", one may eat of it without tithing—right in the field, in passing. The tractate defines for each kind what counts as finishing: gathered into a heap, brought into the courtyard, covered, sold.

Out of this comes a detailed picture of a farming day: a labourer in an orchard, a passer-by at someone else's fig tree, a housewife carrying a basket indoors. Few ancient texts show ordinary life so closely.

Order: Zeraim. There is Gemara only in the Jerusalem Talmud.
