Tohorot טהרות

The subject is impurity that lasts only until evening, and food that passes impurity further along a chain—first degree, second, third. Particular attention goes to ordinary food, eaten in purity by those who took that upon themselves.

What the tractate is best known for is the rules of doubt: if it is unknown whether a person touched something impure, in a public place he is held pure and in a private one impure. This principle travelled far beyond the laws of purity and became one of the general foundations of Jewish law.

Order: Tohorot. There is no Gemara in either Talmud—the tractate remained mishnah.
