Temurah תמורה
a tractate of the order of Kodashim
The Torah says: do not exchange what is dedicated, and if you have exchanged it—"both it and its substitute shall be holy". A prohibition that does not undo the act: the man transgressed and yet brought it about that the second animal is now holy too. The tractate works out who can make such an exchange, what can be substituted and what cannot.
Then comes the fate of holy animals that cannot be offered: what is redeemed, what is left to graze until a blemish appears, what is destroyed. The tractate is short and wholly about cases that no longer occur—yet it is where one learns how a word creates holiness.
Order: Kodashim. There is Gemara in the Babylonian Talmud.
