Rabbi Menachem Nachum Friedman of Shtefanesht רבי מנחם נחום פרידמן משטפנשט

a son of the Ruzhiner; founder of the court at Shtefanesht

A son of the Ruzhiner. In the division of the father’s inheritance the south fell to him: he settled at Shtefanesht on the Prut, in Moldavia, and his court became the Ruzhin court of Romanian Jewry.

The court. Shtefanesht kept the Ruzhin manner—silent dignity—and lay farthest of all from the Galician brothers. He led the court from 1851.

He died in 1869; the court was taken by his only son, Rabbi Avraham Matityahu.
