Rav Yitzchak Yaakov Weiss—Minchat Yitzchak רב יצחק יעקב וייס — מנחת יצחק

He was born in Galicia, in Dolyna, and young became a dayan in Grosswardein—Oradea—a large community on the border of Hungary and Romania. He survived the war; his community did not. After the war he headed the rabbinical court of Manchester for twenty-two years, and in 1970 took the court of the Edah HaChareidis in Jerusalem, holding it until his death.

His responsa—Minchat Yitzchak, ten volumes—are among the most read in the halakhah of our century. The questions there are those earlier books did not answer because such things did not exist: organ transplants, electricity on Shabbat, new medicines, new forms of trade. He answered in detail and with caution, deriving every ruling from the sources and not hurrying to permit where he doubted.

In Jerusalem he was among those who kept the old yishuv strict—and at the same time a judge consulted far beyond its bounds.
