Rabbi Mordechai Banet רבי מרדכי בנעט
rabbi of Nikolsburg and of all Moravia for forty years
He was born in 1753 at Csurgó in Hungary and studied at Nikolsburg and in Prague under Rabbi Yechezkel Landau, the Noda BiYehuda. In 1789 he became rabbi of Nikolsburg and Landesrabbiner of Moravia—and remained so for forty years, to his death.
His yeshiva at Nikolsburg was one of the largest in the empire: hundreds of students, among them Rabbi Yehuda Assad and other future rabbis of Hungary. When the Reform temple opened in Hamburg he came out against it together with the Chatam Sofer and other rabbis in the collection Eleh Divrei HaBrit; a long friendship and correspondence bound him to the Chatam Sofer. His books are the responsa Parashat Mordechai and the Biur Mordechai on the code of the Mordechai.
He died on 13 Av 5589 (1829) at Carlsbad, where he had gone for a cure, and was buried at Nikolsburg.
