Rav Ovadia Hadaya—Yaskil Avdi רב עובדיה הדאיה — «ישכיל עבדי»
a judge of the Jerusalem court and head of the kabbalists' yeshiva Beit El; Yaskil Avdi—eight volumes of responsa
Born in Aleppo, he was brought to Jerusalem by his family at eight. He learned under the city's Aleppan sages, then at Porat Yosef, where he became one of the first teachers. The Aleppo school—exact halakhah and the Rashash's kabbalah studied as an ordinary subject—shaped him.
He was a judge on the Sephardic court of Jerusalem and then on the Supreme Rabbinical Court, and at the same time—from 1939—head of the Beit El yeshiva, the oldest kabbalists' yeshiva in Jerusalem, the very one the Rashash founded. The combination did not seem strange to him: in Aleppo it was always taught so.
His responsa Yaskil Avdi—eight volumes—answer questions of halakhah and questions of the hidden teaching alike, and he was asked from across the Sephardic world. He died in Shevat 1969 in Jerusalem.
