Rabba bar Rav Huna רבה בר רב הונא

Rabba bar Rav Huna learned first of all from his father—Rav Huna, head of Sura—and after the deaths of his father and Rav Chisda led the school of Sura. He reminded the exilarchate that the authority of Torah is not issued by a chancellery: "it is not from you that I hold it" (Sanhedrin 5a)—the pedigree of his warrant ran through his father to Rav, and through Rav to Heaven.

The Talmud keeps his rules of reverence—he would take off his outer cloak before prayer, to stand as a servant before his Master (Shabbat 10a). The year of his death is firm: 4082 from Creation (322 CE), by the Epistle of Rav Sherira; his body, like his father's, was carried to the Land of Israel for burial.
