Rabbi Chanina Sgan haKohanim רבי חנינא סגן הכהנים

The sgan was the High Priest's deputy, standing at his right on Yom Kippur. Rabbi Chanina held the office in the Temple's final years, and the sages of Yavne questioned him as an eyewitness: dozens of his testimonies in the Mishnah begin "I saw"—how they carried, how they burned, how they sprinkled.

In Pirkei Avot, in his name: "Pray for the welfare of the government, for were it not for the fear of it, a man would swallow his fellow alive" (Avot 3:2)—the words of a man who saw what became of the city when authority collapsed.

The sources give no years of life; the window of activity is set by generation, following Aharon Hyman's Toldot Tannaim ve-Amoraim.
