Rabbi Elazar of Modiin was a master of aggadah: when the reading of a verse reached a dead end, Rabbi Yehoshua would say, "there is still hope from Elazar haModai". In Avot, in his name, stands the stern list of what forfeits a man's share in the world to come even with Torah and good deeds behind him: profaning the holy, shaming one's fellow in public (Avot 3:11).

The Jerusalem Talmud calls him Bar Kokhba's uncle—which makes what followed heavier still.

During the revolt he sat in sackcloth and ashes in besieged Beitar and prayed: "Master of the world, do not judge today". A Samaritan slandered him to Bar Kokhba as betraying the city; the leader kicked the old man and killed him—and a voice went out: for this Beitar shall fall (Yerushalmi Taanit 4:5). Thus tradition bound the city's fall to the fall of its prayer.
