Rabbi Yose haGlili was that rarity among the Tannaim, a Galilean: the academies then stood in Judea. Entering the study house he disputed with Rabbi Tarfon and Rabbi Akiva from the doorstep—and the Talmud preserves dozens of their contests; in the laws of offerings his word carries special weight.
His misfortune is also recorded: a quarrelsome wife whom he supported even after the divorce, "for she is of your own flesh" (Bereshit Rabbah 17). And Bruria needled him for the long-winded question "by which road does one go to Lod", reminding him that the sages said not to multiply talk with a woman (Eruvin 53b).
