The town of the Chafetz Chaim: from here came the book on evil speech and the Mishnah Berurah.
Rabbi Yisrael Meir Kagan lived in Radin almost all his life, kept a shop his wife ran, and wrote two books that changed daily practice: Chafetz Chaim on evil speech, and the Mishnah Berurah, the compendium of everyday halakha that became the standard.
The yeshiva in Radin grew around the man, not the other way round. After his death and the war it was reborn in Israel and America, and the town's name stayed in the language as the man's: Chafetz Chaim is both the book and him.
