Rav Acha bar Abuha is of the second generation of the Savoraim. Rav Sherira gives the day of his death as Yom Kippur 4272.
Rav Sherira's list of the Savoraim is in effect a list of days of death: for most of them neither works nor rulings nor towns are named. So the reckoning of the age is made up—not of what was done, but of when each man was gone. Their work is visible not in the letter but in the Talmud itself: where it explains its own arrangement, in the view of most Rishonim, it is they who speak.
The lists of the Savoraim have come down in poor shape: Seder Tannaim veAmoraim and Ibn Daud's Sefer haKabbalah give the names in a different order and sometimes in a different set. All that is known of this age rests on a single letter of Rav Sherira, written half a thousand years later.
