Person
Rav Mesharshiya רב משרשיא
a student of Rava, named in the Talmud scores of times
He may have studied under Abaye as well. He worked closely with Rav Papa. There is no separate article on him in the works of reference: he is of those whose name lives in the disputes themselves and not in biographies. Three of his sons also became amoraim: Rava (Nazir 40b), Rav Sama (Chullin 17b) and Rav Yitzchak (Avodah Zarah 8b); his grandfather was Rav Aha son of Rav (Sanhedrin 77a), and thence his descent from Rav.
The sources give no years. The window is set by the generation: he is of the fifth generation of Babylonian amoraim, a student of Rava.
