Ravina of Umtza רבינא מאומצא
a Savora, namesake of the man with whom horaah ended
Ravina of Umtza is a Savora named in Rav Sherira's letter apart from Ravina, head of Sura, of whom it is said "sof horaah", the end of ruling. He died in Adar 4267, seven years after that Ravina.
Identical names are a standing difficulty of this age: the Amoraim and Savoraim have few of them and many generations, and men are told apart by town, by interlocutor, by place in a list. Here the town tells them apart: Umtza.
The lists of the Savoraim have come down in poor shape: Seder Tannaim veAmoraim and Ibn Daud's Sefer haKabbalah give the names in a different order and sometimes in a different set. All that is known of this age rests on a single letter of Rav Sherira, written half a thousand years later.
