The oldest community of Bavaria: Petachiah set out from here, Isserlein was born here, and Israel Bruna was tried here.
Regensburg on the Danube is one of the oldest Jewish communities of the German lands; Jews are mentioned here from the eleventh century. From here in the twelfth century Rabbi Petachiah set out on his circuit, and here his account was written down—in the circle of Chasidei Ashkenaz, to which Rabbi Judah he-Hasid of Regensburg belonged.
In the fifteenth century the town is prominent again. Rabbi Israel Isserlein was born here. From 1446 Rabbi Israel Bruna lived here and kept a yeshiva—and here in 1474 a blood libel was raised against him, from which the emperor's intervention delivered him.
The community was expelled from the town in 1519.
