Ritz Giat—Rabbi Yitzchak ibn Ghiyyat רבי יצחק אבן גיאת

Rabbi Yitzchak ibn Ghiyyat (1038–1089) stood at the head of the academy of Lucena—the town Spanish Jewry called "the city of Torah"—and was close to the house of Shmuel haNagid. His code Shaarei Simchah ("Gates of Joy") gathers the festival laws from the Talmud and the Geonim; the Rishonim cite it constantly.

His other half is poetry. He wrote hundreds of piyyutim, and his selichot entered the Sephardi machzor. His student was Moshe ibn Ezra, one of the four great poets of the Spanish golden age: the line "the codifier teaches the poet" is visible here directly.
