Seder HaDorot סדר הדורות
Rabbi Jehiel Heilprin's work in three parts: a chronicle from Creation, a name-by-name list of the Tannaim and Amoraim with their dates, and a catalogue of authors and books.
Three parts:
· Yemot Olam—a chronicle from Creation to the author's own time. The years of the figures of Scripture are derived by reckoning, resting on earlier Hebrew chronological works. · Seder Tannaim veAmoraim—a list of the Tannaim and Amoraim in alphabetical order, stating when each lived. · The third part—a catalogue of authors and their books in alphabetical order, with notes on the Talmud.
First printed at Karlsruhe in 5529 by the author's grandson, Judah Löb Heilprin—after his death.
What is used today. The second part. When a name appears in the Talmud and one needs to know in which generation the man lived and whose contemporary he was, this is where one looks. By that work Seder HaDorot has held its place for three centuries.
For a reference work that sets events out by years from Creation, it is one of the books it stands on.
