Rabbi Shem Tov ibn Gaon רבי שם טוב בן אברהם אבן גאון

he defended the Mishneh Torah against the strictures of the Raavad

He studied Talmud under the Rashba and Kabbalah under Rabbi Yitzchak ben Todros. From Soria he went up to the Land of Israel: first Jerusalem, then Safed. Keter Shem Tov was finished at Safed in 1315, Baddei ha-Aron u-Migdal Hanan'el in Iyyar 1325.

Keter Shem Tov opens the kabbalistic hints in the Ramban's commentary on the Torah, and Rabbi Isaac of Acre reproached the book: there is conjecture in it, he said, and not what was handed down. He is among the first Spanish kabbalists to go to Safed for the sake of seclusion—two hundred years before the Arizal.
