Rabbi Shimon Sofer of Erlau רבי שמעון סופר מערלוי
rabbi of Erlau for sixty-four years; grandson of the Chatam Sofer
Son of Rabbi Avraham Shmuel Binyamin Sofer, the Ktav Sofer, and grandson of the Chatam Sofer. He was born on 28 Iyar 1850 in Pressburg.
From 1881 until the end of his life he was rabbi of Eger, in Jewish speech Erlau; he set up there a yeshiva named for the Chatam Sofer and led it sixty-four years. His book is the Hisorerus Teshuva, responsa in four parts; there is also the Shir Maon on the Torah. He also prepared for print the works of his grandfather and his father.
He perished on 21 Sivan 1944 in Auschwitz, together with his son and the community of Eger. So the Hungarian branch of the house of the Chatam Sofer was torn away at once.
