The great-grandson of Rabbi Moshe of Zvhil, a son of the Maggid of Zlotchov; the Zvhil court in Volhynia held for four generations, and he took it in 1901.
Departure. Under Soviet rule a court became impossible. In 1926 he left—through Poland to the Land of Israel—and settled in the Old City of Jerusalem, in a poor quarter, saying nothing of himself. He prayed in other men’s minyanim, stood in queues; when he was recognised it was too late to hide, and the court gathered around him anew.
He is remembered for help to the poor that was not the court’s doing but his own: he went from house to house himself. He died on 26 Iyar 1945; the Zvhil court stands in Jerusalem to this day.
