He was born on 17 Nisan 1894 in Ungvar. He studied under Rabbi Yeshayahu Silberstein, under Rabbi Yissachar Dov of Belz and under Rabbi Tzvi Elimelech of Blazowa. The year of birth is given three ways—5654, 5652 and 5655; we set the one for which the day and month are also given.
He had no court by inheritance: the chasidim gathered around him of themselves. His first fellowship he founded in Satmar; then he went up to Jerusalem, returned to Hungary for his health, set up a yeshiva in Beregszasz—and in 1939 settled for good in Meah Shearim.
His books—the Shomer Emunim on faith and trust, the Taharat ha-Kodesh, the Shulchan ha-Tahor, the Noam ha-Levavot—are read also by those who do not belong to his house. He died on 6 Nisan 1947 and is buried on the Mount of Olives. After him the house divided in two: the son-in-law's followers became Toldos Aharon, the son's Shomrei Emunim.
