Yisrael Salanter's foremost disciple; he set Mussar as a training of mind and order
The closest disciple of Rabbi Yisrael Salanter, under whom he studied at the Nevyozer Kloiz in Kovno.
The Kelm Talmud Torah. Founded about 5625. The learning there was not by Gemara alone: three hours a day went to general subjects—geography, arithmetic, Russian. For a Lithuanian yeshiva of that time this was unheard of. In 5640 the school moved to Grobin and ran until 5646.
What he taught. Not impulse and not feeling, but order. Mussar with him is work on clarity: a person can move, and can see, only once he has cleared his head of confusion and stray thought. Hence the Kelm training: slowly, exactly, to the end.
Disciples. First among them Rabbi Yeruchom Levovitz, the mashgiach of Mir. Also Nosson Tzvi Finkel, the Alter of Slobodka, and others through whom the Kelm approach spread across the whole Lithuanian world of learning.
He died on 26 July 1898—7 Av 5658 (some lists give the 8th: the day begins in the evening).
