Tishrei תשרי

The seventh month of the Torah's count—and the first of the count of years: on the first of Tishrei the world is judged, and the year's number changes. By tradition man was created in Tishrei—the judgment of Rosh Hashanah is the anniversary of creation. The Ten Days of Repentance lead from judgment to the seal of Yom Kippur, and four days later come the seven days of Sukkot and Simchat Torah, the end and new beginning of the Torah-reading cycle.

The month names now in use are Babylonian: "the names of the months came up with us from Babylon", says the Jerusalem Talmud. In the Torah months are counted—"the first", "the seventh"—from Nisan, the month of the Exodus.
