The court of Rabbi Chaim Halberstam, known for its charity and for the bitter dispute with Sadigura.
Rabbi Chaim Halberstam, the Divrei Chaim, gave away whatever he received and died leaving no money. He was at the same time a major halakhist: his responsa are still studied.
In the 1860s a dispute broke out between Sanz and Sadigura over the splendour of courts and what is permitted to a rebbe, splitting Galician Hasidism for years. One honest thing can be said: each side was right about what it feared—Sanz that the court would replace the service, Sadigura that poverty would become an end in itself.
