Uriah son of Shemaiah אוּרִיָּהוּ בֶּן־שְׁמַעְיָהוּ

Of Kiriath-jearim. "And there was also a man who prophesied in the name of the Lord, Uriah son of Shemaiah of Kiriath-jearim, and he prophesied against this city and against this land according to all the words of Jeremiah" (Jeremiah 26:20).

King Jehoiakim sought to put him to death. Uriah was afraid and fled to Egypt. Then the king sent men there, and they brought him back. "And he struck him down with the sword and cast his body into the graves of the common people" (26:23).

This is told in the chapter about the trial of Jeremiah himself—as an example of what happened to prophets under that king. Jeremiah was saved by the hand of Ahikam son of Shaphan.

One short story, told in passing—and in it one sees what prophecy cost in those years: the man who said the same thing was killed, and the difference between him and Jeremiah was only whether anyone stood up for him.
