Alexander the Great Ἀλέξανδρος ὁ Μέγας

He reigned thirteen years, went from Macedon to India, and died at Babylon at thirty-three. He took Judea in 332 BCE, and this is the rare case where the academic and traditional counts almost coincide: 3429 AM against 3448. The Talmud (Yoma 69a) tells how he met the High Priest Shimon ha-Tzaddik and dismounted to bow to him; Josephus tells the same story differently. In neither is it historical evidence, but it has its own significance: it is the first meeting of Jewish authority with Greek, told from the Jewish side.

From him too comes the Hellenization out of which, a century and a half later, the decree of Antiochus and the Maccabean revolt will come.
