Averroes (Ibn Rushd) ابن رشد
Andalusian jurist and philosopher: the great commentator on Aristotle
Born at Córdoba twelve years before Maimonides, he and the Rambam are countrymen and near contemporaries—yet they never met. The same power parted them: Maimonides left al-Andalus fleeing the Almohad persecution, while Ibn Rushd served those same Almohads—and was for a time banished by them. He wrote three sets of commentaries on Aristotle—short, middle and long. Maimonides read them late, already in Egypt, and wrote of them with respect.
His dates are exact to the day: 14 April 1126—11 December 1198. A death in December means 4959 AM.
