Avicenna (Ibn Sina) ابن سينا
Persian physician and philosopher: the Canon of Medicine and metaphysics
The Canon of Medicine was translated into Latin and remained the textbook of European universities for five centuries. The proof of God's existence from necessary being, which Maimonides employs, comes from him; and through him too comes the notion that the world is necessary rather than freely created—precisely the notion Maimonides disputes. His birth year is "c. 980".
