Charles Darwin
The theory of natural selection: On the Origin of Species, 1859
He gathered his arguments for twenty years and printed the Origin of Species in 1859. The Jewish answer to him was not one answer. Rav Kook held that the gradual development of the world does not contradict the Torah and even answers to the kabbalistic view of ascent; Rav Hirsch in Germany separated the question of the origin of species from that of the origin of man; some sages rejected the whole. The argument in Hebrew books has run without prohibitions and without courts, unlike the way it ran in American school legislation.
