The telescope and mechanics; condemned by the Inquisition in 1633
There is no direct Jewish connection; he matters because his trial made the argument over the new astronomy a matter of authority rather than of learning. In Hebrew books the same argument ran differently—without prohibitions and without a court, but also without a decision: some accepted Copernicus, others held to Ptolemy, and no one was tried for it.
