Julian the Apostate

the emperor who ordered the Temple rebuilt

Ruled 361–363 CE. Breaking with Christianity, he ordered the Temple in Jerusalem rebuilt at state expense—the works began and were abandoned after a fire on the site and the emperor's death on the Persian campaign. The brief hope of 363 stayed in the memory of both faiths: to one an unfulfilled miracle, to the other a sign.
