Julius Caesar
Conqueror of Gaul and dictator of Rome; confirmed the rights of the Jews
He was killed in the senate in March 44 BCE. These enactments, collected in Josephus (Antiquities XIV), became the legal ground of the diaspora's existence in the Roman empire for three centuries: each succeeding emperor confirmed them, and it was to them that communities appealed when local authorities tried to squeeze them. Suetonius reports that at his funeral the Jews of Rome mourned by night.
His birth year is 100 BCE; a minority of scholars argue for 102.
