Suleiman I the Magnificent سليمان
Ottoman sultan at the empire's height; in his reign Tiberias was granted to Doña Gracia
His empire was the place to which the exiles of Spain and Portugal went: Salonica became a Jewish city, Istanbul and Izmir great communities, and Safed grew in his reign into a town of kabbalists and clothiers. In 1561 he granted Tiberias and seven surrounding villages to Doña Gracia Nasi and her nephew Joseph Nasi—the first attempt at Jewish self-rule in the Land of Israel since Roman times, and it was granted by a sultan's decree.
He died on 6 September 1566, that is already in 5327 AM if one reckons from Tishrei.
