Isaiah Berlin

In 1932, at twenty-three, he was elected to All Souls at Oxford—the first unbaptised Jew to hold a fellowship there. He was an active Zionist: he worked with Chaim Weizmann and served the Zionist cause during and after the war years in Washington. His own position was awkward and consistent: Jews should either go to Israel or honestly accept being a minority—and he did not go himself: "I am a Russian Jew from Riga, and all my years in England cannot change this." The Jerusalem Prize in 1979; a knighthood in 1957, the Order of Merit in 1971. He is buried in Wolvercote Cemetery, Oxford.
