One detail here matters more than the rest. For years he prepared The Aryan Papers—a Holocaust film from Louis Begley's novel Wartime Lies; Johanna ter Steege had been cast. In 1993 he stopped the work, partly because Schindler's List had occupied the same ground. His verdict on Spielberg's film is reported by Frederic Raphael: the Holocaust is about six million who were killed, not about six hundred who were not.
It must not be printed that he was an atheist as his own self-description: he never said so on record. And "he staged the moon landing" is folklore, not information.
