He was trained in the Lithuanian yeshivot and came to America when there was almost no one there to learn from and almost no one to learn with.
From 5708 to 5728, twenty years, he headed Torah Vodaath in Brooklyn—the yeshiva through which a generation of American teachers and rabbis passed. It was that generation that made what followed possible: the yeshiva world in America did not merely survive, it grew.
Emes LeYaakov. Several volumes: on the Talmud, on the Shulchan Aruch and on the Torah—the last with analysis of grammar. A scholar who treats the grammar of the language of Scripture as a matter of first importance is a rarity among roshei yeshiva.
He died on 29 Adar I 5746.
